ArmMotus EMU

ArmMotus™ EMU is a powered, cable-driven 3D upper-limb rehabilitation robot from Fourier Rehab / Fourier Intelligence. It is intended for clinical upper-limb rehabilitation for disabilities caused by neurological or musculoskeletal disorders, using adjustable assistance/resistance, force feedback, and real-time training data to support therapist-guided rehabilitation.

Description

ArmMotus™ EMU is a medical rehabilitation device for upper-limb assessment and training. Fourier describes it as a “3D Upper Limb Rehabilitation Device,” while the brochure and third-party design-award pages describe it as a 3D back-drivable upper-limb rehabilitation robot/equipment. The device uses a cable-driven mechanism and a parallel structure made from lightweight carbon-fiber rods to reduce friction and inertia during human-machine interaction.

The system is designed for rehabilitation clinics and hospitals working with users who have upper-limb disability from neurological or musculoskeletal disorders. Training features include real-time range-of-motion visualization, force feedback, visual/audio/haptic feedback, sitting or standing configurations, support for multiple arm configurations, and training modes that include passive, assistive, active, and resistance-based rehabilitation. A useful catalog note is that this is not presented by Fourier’s main product page as a conventional body-worn exoskeleton; it is better described as a powered, cable-driven upper-limb rehabilitation robot or exoskeleton-adjacent rehabilitation system.

Notes: University of Melbourne article explains that the ArmMotus™ EMU was developed with University of Melbourne researchers, Royal Melbourne Hospital experts, and Fourier Intelligence, and that Fourier Intelligence licensed the device and patent from the University. The same University of Melbourne article reports that the device received the 2022 Red Dot Award and German iF Design Award.

Exoskeleton Report does not endorse one exoskeleton product over another.  The exoskeleton catalog is purely for educational purposes.  The catalog is meant to provide an easily accessible birds-eye view of the exoskeleton industry, and a quick method to sort exoskeletons by type and purpose.  All prices are approximate and are meant to provide a general sense of the cost of the devices.
