EASE LU 20

The EASE LU 20 is a powered occupational exoskeleton for repeated lifting, carrying and lowering tasks in logistics and production. Battery-powered motors apply assistance through cables, with adjustable support of up to 20 kg (44.1 lb) in total, or up to 10 kg (22.0 lb) per arm, according to EASE. This assistance rating is not a safe lifting limit. The back-carried system is intended for individually assessed industrial workplaces.

Description

The EASE LU 20 is an active occupational exoskeleton from EASE – Ergonomische Assistenzsysteme GmbH, based in Munich, Germany. It is designed for repeated manual handling between floor and shoulder height in logistics and production. EASE describes the system as supporting the arms and back during lifting, carrying, and setting down loads.

Assistance mechanism

A battery, sensors, and motors provide assistance through cables. The wearer can adjust assistance strength and speed in steps using the control panel. In free mode, the system follows the wearer’s movements during other tasks between lifts. EASE states that loads are distributed across the forearms, shoulders, back, and hips, and that it developed the backpack system with Deuter.

Provides up to 20 kg (44.1 lb) of total assistance, with up to 10 kg (22.0 lb) per arm. These figures describe assistance, not electrical power, an allowable object weight, or a guaranteed safe lifting capacity. The object’s weight does not change. EASE requires tasks to remain safe and permitted without the exoskeleton; assistance does not replace workplace risk assessment or ergonomic workplace design.

Applications

  • Order picking, parcel handling and sorting.
  • Material transport, loading and unloading.
  • Machine loading and assembly involving heavy components.

Suitability depends on the individual task, wearer and workplace, movement clearance, and expected water and dust exposure.

Exoskeleton characteristics:

  • Type: powered, battery-operated occupational exoskeleton with motor-driven cable assistance.
  • Assistance: up to 20 kg (44.1 lb) total; up to 10 kg (22.0 lb) per arm.
  • Listed system mass: 5 kg (11.0 lb), carried on the back. The published specification does not state whether the battery is included.
  • Typical battery runtime: 8 hours; actual duration depends on the battery, task, and assistance setting.
  • Donning time: approximately 50 seconds.
  • Operating temperature: −10 to +40 °C (14 to 104 °F), in dry indoor areas.
  • Battery system: replaceable, approved Makita XGT 40 V max batteries and a compatible charger.
  • Shared use: interchangeable body-contact textiles support use by different workers and across shifts.

Fit and operation

The system must be adjusted to each wearer, with fit and settings checked before every use. EASE calls for instruction on fitting, operation, limits, safety and workplace conditions before first use. Use is voluntary and requires workplace approval and a medically suitable, trained adult wearer.

Care and maintenance

Body-contact textiles are interchangeable and machine washable according to their care instructions. EASE recommends a separate set for each regular user and changing textiles between users. Mechanical and electronic components are not machine washable and must be cleaned according to the user manual.

Maintenance frequency depends on usage intensity, and the LU 20 indicates when maintenance is due. Service checks cover components, safety functions, connections, and wear parts. Opening, repair, and modification are reserved for EASE or approved service providers. Training, rollout assistance, maintenance and software or firmware updates depend on the service agreement.

Availability and workplace evaluation

EASE offers a workplace demo enquiry, beginning with a review of the task and working conditions, followed by a practical assessment and a proposed pilot or rollout. Its listed reseller network includes ProHandling and exoskelette.gmbh in Germany and Ryggo in Europe. Pricing, delivery timing, battery configuration and service terms should be confirmed directly with EASE or its reseller.

EASE publishes accounts of workplace trials, including a May 5–9, 2025 trial at Rohde & Schwarz in Teisnach, and July 2026 trials at SFB Schwäbische Formdrehteile and Spitzhüttl Home Company. These manufacturer-reported experiences provide context for development and workplace acceptance.
