On April 2nd, 2015, WinterGreen Research published a new Exoskeleton Market Report.  The report predicts a rise in the exoskeleton robotic rehabilitation market from $16.5 million in 2014 to $2.1 billion by 2021.  The primary share of the predicted market value appears to be composed of predominantly or entirely out of exoskeletons for rehabilitation or disability assistance and does not include any passive exoskeletons or devices geared towards able-bodied users.  The $2.1 billion market share prediction for rehabilitation devices is within the same range as the last report by WinterGreeen Research and should be achievable if all exoskeleton device types are included.

WinterGreen Research’s Exoskeleton Market Report lists the current market leaders as Ekso Bionics and ReWalk Robotics.  Secondary players are identified as Alter G, Hocoma, Parker Hannifin, RexBionics, Sarcos, University of Twente, Catholic University of America.  The selection is not very surprising as both Ekso and ReWalk sales have been reported to be in the 100-140 units range for last year.  The Lokomat by Hocoma may have similar sales as the market leaders, while the Indego by Parker Hannifin and REX by RexBionics are certainly lagging behind.  Major players in the exoskeleton market such as Cyberdyne (Hal), Lockheed Martin (FORTIS), RB3D (Hercule), Honda (Active Assist) are not included in the report, presumably due to their lack of involvement with rehabilitation applications.

The full report is 254 pages long and includes 102 tables and figures.  This is the 602nd market report published by WinterGreen Research.  The report itself is a compilation of interviews and conversations with key customers, industry leaders and distributors as well as database and internet research.  Several major assumptions in the exoskeleton market report appear to be:

  • Rehabilitation exoskeleton devices will successfully pass clinical trials.
  • Exoskeleton technology will continue to improve.
  • Major accidents involving exoskeleton use will not turn media and public opinion against the technology.

The full Exoskeleton Market Report can be purchased from WinterGreen Research for $4000/single copy.
