Exoskeleton Report Newsletter Archive Week 41 2026

Keeping up with the news in our chaotic world is hard, especially when mainstream channels seem to spend less time reporting on technology, innovation, and how it translates into practice. Here are the main news stories for wearable robotics and exoskeletons for Week 41: October 4–10, 2026:

Main ExR Update:

So you bought an exoskeleton, now what!? – Ep. 35 of the Exoskeletons and Wearable Robotics podcast

Exoskeletons and Wearable Robotics Podcast episode 35 artwork

In this podcast episode, Tom and I use owning and storing an electric bike as the foundation of how one would store, transport, and maintain an exoskeleton. As usual, the links to the audio-only version and transcript are on ExR.

Exoskeletons help police patrol mountainous scenic areas in NE China

Police in Shenyang’s Hunnan district are using exoskeletons to patrol Qipanshan Scenic Area in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province. The devices are intended to reduce physical exertion during climbs and extended walking, helping officers reach lost or injured tourists more quickly. In a separate deployment reported by CCTV, police in Xiamen are using battery-powered exoskeletons to support patrols through pedestrian-only streets. Patrol officer Zheng Chao says officers typically walk 20,000–30,000 steps a day.

Exoskeleton Series 16: Visiting the Haier Shenzhen Flagship Store | W2, W3, and W3 Mom Edition

ExR’s Perspective: I don’t think I have ever seen an exoskeleton-only store in my life before! RIDER – Techjoy (in this video: custom colors, custom sizes, specific version for smaller users and assist strap to help with donning and doffing, and so much more..)

Exoskeleton Special 15.1: (Highlights) 2026 Taipei Outdoor Show

ExR’s Perspective: RIDER Techjoy strikes again with a 12-minute summary of consumer exoskeletons and an excellent Q&A section. He does a good job drawing a line and saying “no” this will NOT work for these applications (low body mass, loss of balance, active fire zones, etc…), while adding applications I have never heard of before (elevator inspectors who have to go on every single floor one at a time).

TASK shoulder-exoskeleton study reports reduced muscle activity and fatigue

A 2026 study published in the Japanese Journal of Physiotherapy in Occupational Health evaluated Daido’s TASK AR 1.0 passive shoulder-support exoskeleton during repetitive overhead screw-driving tasks. In a randomized crossover trial involving 10 participants, the exoskeleton reduced middle deltoid muscle activity by 49.4%, biceps activity by 43.9%, and perceived shoulder fatigue by 25.6% compared with working without the device. All five female participants completed the task with assistance, compared with three without it. The researchers concluded that shoulder-support exoskeletons may reduce physical strain and improve work performance, although larger workplace studies are needed to establish long-term benefits and injury-prevention effects.

UMass Lowell Recruiting Older Adults for Powered Ankle Exoskeleton Study

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Lowell are seeking volunteers ages 65–85 for a study titled “Adaptability to Exoskeleton Assistance During Walking.” The research investigates how people learn to incorporate assistance from powered ankle exoskeletons into their walking movements. Participants will complete four laboratory visits of approximately three hours each, involving assisted walking, blood collection, and tests examining mitochondrial function and genetic markers associated with physical and cognitive performance. Compensation is $15 per hour.

A tongue-controlled FES-robotic exoskeleton restores hand function in users with cervical spinal cord injury

Researchers have developed a tongue-controlled hand exoskeleton that uses a sensor-equipped mouthpiece to let users select different grasp patterns and independently control five tendon-driven fingers. The system combines robotic finger flexion with tongue-triggered functional electrical stimulation (FES) to open the hand and release objects, reducing mechanical complexity while limiting stimulation to short bursts to help minimize muscle fatigue. Tested with five people with cervical spinal cord injuries, the system achieved a 96% grasping task success rate, demonstrating the potential of tongue-based interfaces for intuitive exoskeleton control in individuals with severe paralysis.
