SUMMARY:REHACARE 2024
DESCRIPTION:REHACARE is not a dedicated conference for medical exoskeleton technology\, however\, it has been featuring more and more wearables over its run to the point that some almost see it as such. Videos of REHACARE always a multitude of medical exoskeletons and the promotional material for the 2024 edition is no exception. \nREHACARE International is billed as one of the world’s largest (if not the largest) trade fairs for physical rehabilitation\, inclusion\, and care. It is held annually in Düsseldorf\, Germany at the same venue as the A+A Trade Fair\, and normally attracts tens of thousands of exhibitors and attendees. The venue is wonderful (I was just there a few months ago) and the organizers are expecting more than 700 exhibitors from more than 35 countries. There are several exoskeleton developers registered and exhibiting\, including Ekso Bionics and ReWalk. SUMMARY:National Safety Council Congress & Expo 2024
DESCRIPTION:The National Congress Annual Congress and Expositon is annual event that happens every September or October. It is one of many hosted by the National Safety Council each year. The 2024 edition will be held in Orlando\, Florida from September 16-18\, 2024 with seminars running the days before and after. \nThis will not be a dedicated event to occupational exoskeletons and wearable robotics\, however\, recently the National Safety Council has began featuring exo-technology for workers. The 2023 edition included multiple sessions on exos during the congress portion\, specifically in their Innovation Pavilion\, and several exo vendors were present at the expo as well. \nRegistration and information: https://congress.nsc.org/nsc2024/public/enter.aspx \nIn 2023\, NSC also featured Sarah Ballini-Ross (formerly of SAIF Insurance) as a subject matter expert leading various sessions on exoskeletons and wearable safety devices at other events throughout the year. Sara educated and highlighted opportunities and limitations of exo technology. This doesn’t mean\, necessarily\, that the 2024 of the NSF Annual Congress will also feature many occupational exoskeletons but it is worth having the event on the radar. These include a Bomb Squad Walk with a weighted vest and manual dexterity task\, Cache Packaging involving moving varying weight totes\, CPR performance after carrying a medical bag over inclines\, a complex Townhouse Search\, and Firehose Deployment involving hose manipulation. Additional tests include Fire Overhaul using a fire hook for various tasks\, Confined Space navigation\, Don/Doff for Vehicle Entry focusing on exoskeleton usability\, Valve Turning at various heights\, and finally\, an Ascend and Descend Stairs challenge. Bill leads a dynamic team that pursues a vision of people of all ages free to pursue high-quality life and participate fully in work and society thanks to safe and reliable exo technologies. He serves as an advisor to the Automotive Exoskeleton Group (AExG) and is a member of several standards committees including F48 on Exoskeletons and Exosuits. Prior to joining ASTM\, Bill spent the past 17 years providing scientific and technical advice to federal agencies\, first responders\, and international organizations on topics including exoskeletons\, critical infrastructure protection\, CBRNE detection\, and first responder equipment. Bill advocated and aided the establishment of the ASTM F48 committee and is working on their long term strategy and research agendas. He spent a year abroad as a visiting scientist on the European Union’s critical infrastructure protection team at the Joint Research Centre in Italy\, where he provided technical assistance to their working groups to help inform EU policies and international standards. He sponsored a forum through the National Academy of Sciences to convene experts from the federal\, private\, international\, and non-government sectors to exchange information and ideas to improve preparedness and capabilities for disasters that involve accidental or intentional contamination with CBRN agents. He coordinated programs that produced over 50 homeland security focused national standards and over 100 reports on first responder equipment. Bill has received several awards including the US Department of Commerce’s Gold Medal Award for Heroism. Bill holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Dayton\, a Master in Science in Engineering from Wright State University\, and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from The Georgia Institute of Technology. \nDr. Ann Virsts is the project leader of the Mobility Performance of Robotic Systems at NIST. She leads the project by developing test methods\, artifacts\, and datasets that measure the performance and safety characteristics of mobile and wearable robots within manufacturing/industrial environments. Ann is also the Associate project leader for the Emergency Response Robots project in the Fire Risk Reduction in Communities program. She develops and implements robot test methods\, interfaces with emergency responders and robot technology developers\, and meets complex technical and logistical demands of demanding response robot field exercises. Ann’s past contributions include leading data collection efforts and participating in field exercises for several DARPA and Army Research Laboratory projects.
