SUMMARY:I GOT LEGS: Exoskeleton Race - April 2023
DESCRIPTION:The next Exoskeleton Race\, organized by I GOT LEGS\, will be held from 12 pm-1 pm on April 29\, 2023. There is a planned Facebook Live video feed on the I GOT LEGS Facebook page. The event will be divided into a virtual and in-person race. \nThe in-person Exo-Race will be part of the second day of the Clemson Palmetto Games held at Clemson University. As of three weeks before the event\, two exo-racers are registered to go head-to-head on the field. The online component of the race\, however\, is expected to draw anywhere between 8 to 12 other exoskeleton racers doing the Virtual Race on the same day (April 29). A successful virtual race may draw more people to travel for future in-person interactions with the race. \nI GOT LEGS plans to host a handful of Exoskeleton Races throughout the next couple of years. For more\, read: Welcome to the World of Bionic Competition: The Exoskeleton Racing League. \nFunds raised from the Virtual Race are meant to create future training programs\, organize the next competitions\, and build a community around this potential new sport for people with walking disabilities. The ultimate goal of the Exoskeleton Racing League (ERL) is to build enough support and data to create a new Paralympic sport “designed to empower individuals with paralysis to stand\, walk\, and race using cutting-edge exoskeleton technology.” \n“When I am standing and walking in my robotic exoskeleton\, I do not feel disabled\, nor do I feel able-bodied; I feel ReEnabled\,” Adam Gorlitsky\, Founder of I GOT LEGS. DESCRIPTION:The 11th ASTM International Committee F48 on Exoskeletons and Exosuits will be held in conjunction with ASTM committee week this April in Denver\, Colorado. This meeting will take face-to-face\, without a hybrid component for members to join remotely. \nBy hosting the meeting during Committee Week\, F48 members will have the opportunity to connect and interact with other relevant ASTM members and workgroups\, such as Committee F45 on Robotics. Committee Week usually hosts between 17 to 25 ASTM committees with attendee numbers ranging from 800 to 1400. The event is primarily focused on creating consensus-based standards. \nThose interested in participating are advised to register online before the event\, but registering at the door is also possible. SUMMARY:WearRAcon 2023
DESCRIPTION:The largest conference dedicated to exoskeleton technology for the North American continent\, WearRAcon 23\, will occur this year from Thursday to Friday: March 30 – 31st\, 2023. The first WearRAcon was held in 2016\, and rain or shine\, the conference has been held either virtually or in-person yearly ever since. \nThere are two major changes for the 8th iteration of the Wearable Robotics Association Conference (WearRAcon): First\, for the first time ever\, the conference will be held in New Orleans\, Louisiana\, rather than the usual Scottsdale\, Arizona\, location. The change was done to accommodate those attending the Applied Ergonomics Conference at the same venue. This way\, attendees interested in ergonomics can also do a deep dive into the world of exoskeletons\, and those with interest in occupational and industrial exoskeletons could also learn about the latest practical applications. For the second major change\, WearRAcon will be condensed from two and a half days to two days. \nWearRAcon is an important conference to calibrate one’s understanding of the latest in exoskeleton technology over the year. The Exoskeleton Report team has missed the event only one time ever due to unavoidable circumstances. \nThis year’s keynote speaker is scheduled to be Dr. John Howard\, the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Administrator of the World Trade Center Health Program in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. \nNIOSH has expressed an active interest in industrial exoskeletons and has been collecting data on their use. In the U.S.\, exoskeleton producers have been forging ahead with industrial devices\, relying on direct sales. Unlike the EU government\, which has financed wearable robotics studies and technology groups (mainly through its Horizon Program)\, the U.S. civilian government agencies have been mostly on the sidelines. DESCRIPTION:The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society is hosting an in-person ErgoX Symposium\, which will include an entire one-day track on exoskeletons and exosuit technology. The ErgoX Symposium will take place between October 14 and 15\, with educational tracks on cybersecurity\, extended reality\, exoskeletons\, and robotics. The Exoskeleton Track will take place on Saturday\, October 15\, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. It is sponsored by the ASTM Exo Technology Center of Excellence. \nThe theme for this year will be “Blending Worlds – The Evolving Ecosystem of Exoskeletons.” It is hosted again by Chris Reid\, who has done a fantastic job leading and organizing prior iterations. The Exoskeleton Report team has had the pleasure of attending ErgoX in person in 2018 (link) and virtually (link). This year\, ErgoX will again be held in person\, providing ample opportunities for wearing new exoskeletons and networking. DESCRIPTION:ExoBerlin is moving from October 2021 to October 2022. \nSave the date for the International Exhibition and Conference for Exoskeleton & Human Augmentation Systems (ExoBerlin). ExoBerlin 2020 was one of many in-person events that were canceled in 2020 following the Covid-19 restrictions issued by the German Government. The third iteration of the event will have another go-at-it on December 19 and 20\, 2021. You can find more information about the event on the ExoBerlin website. \nWhile the Exoskeleton Report team was not able to attend the 2019 event\, Matthias Bey stepped up to the plate and has written a wonderful recap (with an entire picture gallery) of the conference: EXOberlin 2019 – Onsite Report \nExoBerlin is envisioned to be a gathering centered around exoskeletons\, wearable assistive devices\, intelligent artificial limbs\, wearable sensors\, and smart fabrics. Additional topics will likely include performance monitoring\, motion analysis\, human-robot interactions\, biologically-inspired systems\, and physical rehabilitation. All of these are topics relevant to the wearable robotics industry. \nThe plan is to have the event structured like WearRAcon and ErgoX: the main exhibition floor with concurrently running technology talks. \nTicket sales are scheduled to go live in July 2021.

DESCRIPTION:The EU-funded EUROBENCH project will host a “EUROBENCH Final Even” this June 21-22\, 2022 in Madrid\, Spain. EUROBENCH is working to create a benchmarking framework for robotic systems in Europe\, including exoskeletons. The talks focused on exoskeletons and wearable robotics will be mainly during the first day and include a wearable robots session centered around balance while using exoskeletons\, moving through narrow spaces\, measuring upper limbs involvement\, benchmarking exoskeleton-assisted gait\, navigating stairs\, and resilience (presumably of the wearable devices). Additional sessions will include human-robot interactions (which could include cobots and other non-wearable devices)\, regulations\, and performance. Both days will include a 2-hour lunch for networking\, for those attending the event in person. \nAbout EUROBENCH:\nThanks to the collaboration of the funded entities\, EUROBENCH has developed: \n\nTwo Testing Facilities\, one for wearable robots (located in the Hospital Los Madroños\, in Brunete\, Spain) and the other for humanoid robots (located in the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia\, in Genova\, Italy)\, to allow perform standardized tests on robotic prototypes in a unique location\, saving resources and time.\nA unified Benchmarking Software\, which includes: 1) common protocols to execute standardized tests in any lab setting\, 2) computational tools to compute performance scores according to quantitative Performance Indicators\, and 3) a unified database to compare the performance results with other systems.\n\nThis final event aims to bring together all the entities that have participated in the development of EUROBENCH. In addition to the conference\, there will be several pre-conference workshops held on Monday\, March 21\, including one on exoskeletons and wearable robotics. “Implementation of Exoskeletons” will run from 1 pm to 5 pm by the Automotive Exoskekleton Group (AExG). \nPresenters:\n  \n \nFrom left to right (image above)\, the facilitators of the workshop will be Marisol Barrero\, Amazon Web Services; David Brodie\, Cargill\, Inc.; Ryan Porto\, General Motors; Bill Billotte\, ASTM Exo Technology Center of Excellence; Dr. Samuel Reimer Ottobock\, and Matthew Marino\, HeroWear \nProgram:\nThe workshop will start with an overview of the state of the art of exoskeleton technology for industrial and occupational applications. From 2017 to 2018\, Erika completed MossRehab’s PT neurological residency program and then received her NCS in 2019. Since 2018\, Erika has been a PT at MossRehab on the CVA acute inpatient rehab team. She became a certified Ekso user in 2019 and gained experience utilizing the Ekso with the following patient populations: TBI\, CVA\, and SCI. In June 2021\, Erika became a level 3 Ekso Trainer through Ekso Bionics. \nSarah Lamberton received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Drexel University in 2018 and has worked at MossRehab since. She started her PT career working in outpatient neurorehabilitation. She became a certified Ekso User in 2019 while working in outpatient. She then transitioned roles as an inpatient rotator gaining experience using the Ekso with TBI\, CVA\, and SCI. WMSDs are known to be caused by multiple factors\, such as repetitive motion\, excessive force\, and awkward\, non-ergonomic body postures. Not surprisingly\, work environments with such factors may present an incidence of WMSDs of up to 3 or 4 times higher than in the overall population.\nIn this talk\, we show our approach to evaluate the human motion with respect to ergonomics indexes\, optimize the motion\, and intervene on the task based on the optimized motion. \nIn the first part of the talk\, we show how digital human models can be used to evaluate body posture according to classic ergonomics indexes and/or joint torque estimations. We show how this approach can be extended to evaluate the impact of external agents\, such as robots and exoskeletons\, that may be in physical contact with a human. In particular\, we show the results of a pilot study that evaluated the impact of commercial exoskeletons (Laevo\, Corfor\, CrayX\, BackX) for a typical strenuous activity in the health sector. \nIn the second part\, we propose an approach to improve initial whole-body motions according to one or multiple ergonomics indexes using single- and/or multi-objective optimization. Then\, we make the case that a robot could use physical interactions to drive the human towards more ergonomic whole-body motions\, possibly to an ergonomically optimal motion. \nIn the last part\, we briefly talk about the importance of studying human motor behavior during physical interaction to improve current human-robot collaboration strategies. My main research interests lie in understanding the impact of rehabilitation technology on neurophysiological\, biomechanical\, and clinical levels (including the safety of human-robot interaction)\, and supporting its application in clinical practice.\nDr. Fosch-Villaronga is an Assistant Professor at the eLaw Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University (NL) where he investigates legal and regulatory aspects of robot and AI technologies\, with a special focus on healthcare. Eduard recently published the book ‘Robots\, Healthcare\, and the Law. Regulating Automation in Personal Care’ with Routledge and is interested in human-robot interaction\, responsible innovation\, and the future of law.\nCarlos J. Calleja is a Research Assistant at the eLaw Center for Law and Digital Technologies at Leiden University (NL). Carlos is currently working within PROPELLING\, which stands for “Pushing Robot Development for Policymaking” and is an FSTP (financial support to third parties) from the Horizon 2020 Eurobench project. Carlos investigates the potential for using robot testbeds as data generators for speeding the creation\, revision\, or discontinuation of standards for lower-limb exoskeletons.\n\nStandards and certification is an important topic for the growth of the exoskeleton industry. Potential buyers shouldn’t be the ones that are downselecting devices and solutions based purely on marketing material. For example\, imagine having to purchase a car without an independent safety rating. This webinar could be a window into the efforts by EUROBENCH and how they compare and contrast to those of ASTM International and other organizations.
