Professor William Marras has published a study in Applied Ergonomics that suggests that the mental tow of wearing an exoskeleton cancels out any physical benefits. “in separate sessions, they asked those same participants to perform that same task – lifting a medicine ball for 30 minutes, in one session wearing an exoskeleton – but added a mental task: They had the participants subtract 13 from a random number between 500 and 1,000 each time they lifted the ball.”  Additional information beyond the article is that a passive back support exoskeleton was used and participants in the study were given 5 minutes or less to acclimate or learn to use the exoskeleton.

The equivalent study would be “bicycles don’t have a positive effect on mobility because people keep falling down” after being given 5 minutes to learn how to ride one.

Furthermore, this marks a cultural shift in the U.S. where the public is learning how easy it is to criticize. It is much easier to publish a paper on how something doesn’t work, compared to finding the right conditions to get something to work and be useful.
